Roosevelt Neighborhood Luminarias

Dear Neighbor — You are warmly invited to join us in “reigniting” an old Roosevelt Neighborhood tradition: holiday luminarias! We will display the luminarias on December 24th and 25th. The cost is $10 per house and covers the bags, sand, and candles.

If you are interested in participating, please contribute $10 no later than December 20th. If you prefer to pay online, you may send the money via PayPal to the phxraanewsletter@gmail.com. (You may also email that address with questions)

Please pick up your supplies on the afternoon of Sunday, December 23rd, in front of 502 W. Lynwood Street -or- 312 W. Culver Street. If you would like to participate but can’t pick up the supplies at that time, let us know.

Monday, December 17th at 4.30pm is the RAA board meeting. We are meeting in the community room of the Lofts at McKinley, the new affordable senior living complex on 5th ave. The mgmt company has invited the residents to come meet us and I would like to encourage everyone from the neighborhood who can attend to come say “Welcome” to our new neighbors.

The tour takes place on Saturday, November 10th, from 10am to 4pm and will include classic cars on display. This is a Self Guided Tour, so bring your walking shoes as the areas to visit are spread over the entire Roosevelt District. There will be a limited number of Guided tour tickets available for those who register early(MARSHALL SHORE EARLY TICKETS HAVE SOLD OUT). These include a narrated tour full of stories and history with the Famous Phoenix Hipstorian Marshall Shore.

ONLINE ORDERING IS CLOSED, TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED at the TourFest Booth at the Certified Local Fall Festival (between Central and 3rd Ave on Portland Street).

Marshall Shore Roosevelt Tour – Nov 10th (MARSHALL SHORE GUIDED TOUR TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT).

Time – Tour will run from 11am – 1pm.

Price – $15 Each

Where – Meet at 11am at the TourFest booth at the Certified Local Fall Festival (between Central and 3rd Ave on Portland Street).

On the Marshall Tour you will get to visit Selected Homes along with Kennilworth School, Easleys and The Puppet Theater.

After you make your online purchase, your name and ID that match the payment will get you your wrist band.Wrist bands are required for admittance to the properties and they can be picked up on the day of the event at our TourFest booth at the Certified Local Fall Festival (between Central and 3rd Ave on Portland Street). Tickets will also be available at the booth on the day of the event.Unfortunately, many properties on the tour are not handicapped accessible. Light Rail use is encouraged and the nearest stop to Portland Parkway is the Roosevelt stop. Check back for a map and list of properties. Historic Roosevelt Neighborhood’s TourFest Set for Saturday, November 10th

Back by popular demand, the annual Historic Roosevelt Neighborhood TourFest by the Roosevelt Action Association has restarted. The Historic Roosevelt Neighborhood is a modern name for a series of neighborhoods that grew north of the city between 1893 and 1930 and it spans from McDowell to Van Buren and from Central Ave to 7th Avenue. TourFest offers a rare glimpse into the history and architecture of Phoenix’s earliest suburbs.

The tour takes place on Saturday, November 10th, from 10am to 4pm and will include classic cars on display and self guided tours. Please bring your walking shoes as the tour is spread over the entire Roosevelt area. Limited early registration tickets are available for a guided tour full of history and stories by the famous Phoenix historian Marshall Shore. The Fest in TourFest is the Certified Local Fall Festival presented by Local First Arizona. The free annual festival has relocated to Portland Parkway, right in the heart of the Roosevelt Neighborhood. Enjoy the valley’s best food, live music, fun activities for kids and unique shopping from Arizona’s locally owned businesses.

Proceeds from TourFest support the work of the Roosevelt Action Association’s mission to preserve the neighborhood’s unique historic character. Tickets cost $12 per person for the TourFest. Please visit http://www.rooseveltneighborhood.org/ for advanced tickets and full details.

The Roosevelt neighborhood reflected the early efforts of Phoenicians to create a genteel society, the dusty frontier town emerging into the urban center of the Southwest. Today, the neighborhood is a mixed use urban neighborhood with restaurants, offices, hotels and multifamily incorporated throughout the historic character of the original neighborhood.
